Soccer, or football, is a team sport played between two teams of 11 players each on a rectangular field. The objective is to score goals by kicking or heading the ball into the opponent's net using any part of the body except the hands and arms. Players cannot touch the ball with their hands or arms while it is in play, except for the goalkeeper within the penalty area. Common violations include offside (a player ahead of the ball and the second-last opponent when the ball is played), fouls (unfair physical contact), and throw-ins, free kicks, or penalty kicks awarded for infringements.
Practical Example: A Typical Sequence
In a physical education class game, Team A starts with a kickoff from the center circle. Player 1 passes to Player 2, who dribbles forward but avoids offside by staying level with the defender. If Player 3 from Team B commits a foul by tripping Player 2, the referee awards a free kick to Team A from the foul spot. If the foul occurs in the penalty area, a penalty kick is taken from 11 meters out, offering a direct shot on goal.
