A continent is one of Earth's several large landmasses, typically distinguished by convention rather than strict criteria. While there is no single universally accepted definition, continents are generally understood to be extensive, continuous expanses of land, often including associated islands and shallow continental shelves, that are geologically and geographically distinct from one another.
How Continents Are Distinguished
Continents are primarily distinguished by their vast size, significant elevation above sea level, and distinctive geological composition, often encompassing a continental crust much thicker than oceanic crust. They also tend to have unique flora, fauna, and sometimes cultural characteristics. The boundaries between continents are often defined by oceans, but sometimes by mountain ranges or narrow land bridges, leading to different models for counting them.
Example: The Seven-Continent Model
A commonly taught model recognizes seven continents: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia. In this model, Europe and Asia are sometimes combined into a single continent called Eurasia due to their continuous landmass. Other models may combine North and South America or separate Australia into Oceania, highlighting the conventional nature of continental definitions.

From a geological perspective, continents are crucial as they are composed primarily of lighter, felsic continental crust that 'floats' higher on the Earth's mantle compared to the denser oceanic crust.
