In geometric optics, light rays are fundamental. They are used to trace the path of light through various optical systems like lenses, mirrors, and prisms. Each ray is imagined to originate from a light source and travel in a straight line until it interacts with a surface or a different medium, where it can reflect or refract.
Practical Example: Light Through a Lens
Consider a converging lens: to find the image of an object, we typically draw several principal rays. A ray parallel to the optical axis will refract through the lens's focal point. A ray passing through the optical center of the lens continues undeflected. The point where these refracted rays converge (or appear to diverge from) determines the location and nature of the image. This ray-tracing method provides a clear visual and calculable pathway for light.
Importance and Limitations of the Ray Model
The ray concept is highly important for providing an intuitive understanding and simplified analysis of wave behavior in many practical scenarios. However, it is an approximation. The ray model does not account for wave phenomena like diffraction (the bending of waves around obstacles) or interference (the superposition of waves), which require a full wave theory. Its limitations become apparent when the wavelength of the wave is comparable to or larger than the size of the obstacles or apertures it encounters.
