A tornado is a rapidly rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. These violent atmospheric phenomena are characterized by their funnel-shaped cloud, which can appear clear or be filled with debris, making them visible. Tornadoes are among Earth's most destructive weather events, capable of causing widespread devastation in seconds.
How Tornadoes Form
Tornadoes typically form in severe thunderstorms, known as supercells, which have a persistent rotating updraft called a mesocyclone. For a tornado to form, warm, moist air needs to rise rapidly, while cool, dry air descends. This interaction creates horizontal rotating air near the ground, which is then tilted vertically by the updraft, creating the characteristic spinning vortex.
Common Occurrences and Characteristics
Tornadoes occur worldwide, but are most prevalent in 'Tornado Alley' in the central United States. They are measured using the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale, which rates their intensity from EF0 (light damage) to EF5 (incredible damage) based on the destruction caused. Tornadoes can be narrow or wide, travel short or long distances, and last from a few seconds to over an hour.

The destructive power of tornadoes stems from their intense rotational winds, which can exceed 300 mph, tearing apart buildings and lifting heavy objects.
