DNA, or Deoxyribonucleic Acid, is a complex molecule that serves as the hereditary material in humans and almost all other organisms. It contains the unique genetic instructions that make each organism distinct, dictating the development, functioning, growth, and reproduction of all known life.
The Double Helix Structure and Its Components
The iconic structure of DNA is a double helix, resembling a twisted ladder. Each side of the ladder is made of a backbone of alternating sugar (deoxyribose) and phosphate groups. The 'rungs' of the ladder are formed by pairs of four nitrogenous bases: Adenine (A), Guanine (G), Cytosine (C), and Thymine (T). A always pairs with T, and C always pairs with G, forming complementary base pairs.
