Defining Groundwater
Groundwater refers to water located beneath the Earth's surface in soil pore spaces and in the fractures of rock formations. It originates from precipitation—rain and melted snow—that infiltrates the ground and moves downward through permeable layers until it reaches a zone where all pores and spaces are saturated. This upper boundary of the saturated zone is known as the water table.
