A Practical Example: Rockwell Hardness Test
In a Rockwell hardness test, a minor load is applied first to seat the indenter and eliminate surface irregularities. Then, a major load is applied, causing further penetration. After a specific dwell time, the major load is removed, but the minor load remains. The Rockwell hardness number is derived from the difference in penetration depth between the minor and major loads, providing a direct reading of the material's hardness on a specific scale (e.g., HRC for hardened steel).
