Heat treatment is a controlled process involving heating and cooling metals or alloys to specific temperatures to intentionally alter their physical and mechanical properties. This process does not change the material's shape, but modifies its microstructure, influencing characteristics like hardness, strength, ductility, and toughness without changing its chemical composition significantly.

This rapid cooling traps carbon atoms within the iron lattice, forming a very hard but brittle microstructure called martensite. Subsequent tempering is then applied to reduce this brittleness, making the steel tough enough for tools, springs, or automotive components.
