Defining Homeostasis
Homeostasis is the process by which a living organism maintains a stable, constant internal environment despite changes in its external environment. It is the body's ability to regulate its internal conditions, such as temperature and water balance, to stay within a narrow, healthy range.
Example: Human Body Temperature
A common example of homeostasis is the regulation of human body temperature. If your body becomes too hot, you start to sweat, which cools the skin as it evaporates. If you get too cold, your muscles shiver to generate heat. Both are automatic responses to maintain a core temperature of approximately 98.6°F (37°C).
