It involves observing characteristic physical or chemical properties, such as color changes, precipitate formation, gas evolution, or distinctive odors, which serve as indicators for specific ions or compounds.

The core principle behind qualitative analysis relies on executing selective chemical reactions that produce unique and easily observable results for different substances. For example, a specific reagent might be added to a solution to cause a particular ion to precipitate out as a solid or to induce a characteristic color change, thereby indicating its presence.
