A Practical Example: Grand Canyon Strata
A classic example of relative dating can be observed in the Grand Canyon. By applying the Principle of Superposition, geologists can determine that the Vishnu Basement Rocks at the bottom are the oldest, followed by the various sedimentary layers above them, with the Kaibab Limestone at the top being the youngest formation in that sequence. Faults or igneous intrusions cutting through these layers would be younger than the layers they penetrate.
