The Core Distinction: CNS vs. PNS
The fundamental difference between the central and peripheral nervous systems is their role and location. The Central Nervous System (CNS) acts as the body's primary command center, consisting of the brain and spinal cord. The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) is the network of nerves that extends from the CNS, connecting it to the rest of the body, including limbs and organs.

The CNS is composed of two main structures: the brain, which is the center for thought, memory, and emotion, and the spinal cord, which serves as the main pathway for information connecting the brain and the PNS. The PNS consists of all other nervous tissue, including cranial nerves (originating from the brain) and spinal nerves (originating from the spinal cord), along with their associated ganglia.

Imagine touching a hot stove. Sensory receptors in your skin send a pain signal through the nerves of the PNS to your spinal cord (part of the CNS). The spinal cord immediately processes this threat and sends a motor command back through the PNS to the muscles in your arm, causing you to pull your hand away. This entire process is a reflex arc that involves both systems working in tandem.

The CNS is responsible for integrating sensory information, processing thoughts, and coordinating complex motor functions. In contrast, the PNS is primarily responsible for communication, relaying sensory input to the CNS and transmitting motor output from the CNS to the muscles and glands.
