The human heart is a muscular organ located in the chest cavity, slightly to the left of the center, behind the sternum. It functions as the central pump of the circulatory system, continuously circulating blood to deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues while removing waste products. Weighing about 250 to 350 grams in adults, it beats approximately 100,000 times per day, pumping around 5 liters of blood per minute at rest.
Key Components
The heart consists of four chambers: two upper atria that receive blood and two lower ventricles that pump it out. It is divided by a septum into right and left sides, preventing oxygenated and deoxygenated blood from mixing. Valves, including the tricuspid, pulmonary, mitral, and aortic, ensure one-way blood flow. The myocardium, the thick muscular wall, provides the contracting force, supported by the endocardium (inner lining) and epicardium (outer layer).

Consider a person exercising: deoxygenated blood from the body enters the right atrium via the superior and inferior vena cava, passes to the right ventricle, and is pumped to the lungs through the pulmonary artery for oxygenation. Oxygen-rich blood returns to the left atrium via pulmonary veins, moves to the left ventricle, and is distributed body-wide through the aorta. This cycle repeats rapidly during activity to meet increased oxygen demands.
