Torsion refers to the twisting of an object caused by an applied torque or twisting force. This force acts perpendicular to the object's longitudinal axis, leading to a shear deformation where cross-sections rotate relative to each other. When an object is subjected to torsion, internal shear stresses are generated within its material. For a circular cross-section, these stresses are highest at the outer surface and decrease linearly to zero at the center. A common example of torsion is seen in a screwdriver. When you turn the handle to tighten a screw, you apply a torque to the shaft of the screwdriver. This torque causes the shaft to twist, or undergo torsion, transmitting the rotational force to the screw head. Similarly, the drive shaft in a car experiences torsion as it transfers power from the engine to the wheels.
